Greenway Waste Solutions at North Meck hosted a ribbon-cutting Friday, July 30, 2021, at its state-of-the-art recycling facility in Huntersville, NC. The brand new 30,000+ square foot facility has been five years in the making and will recycle about 75% of the residential and commercial construction debris that is already accepted at the Greenway Waste Solutions construction and demolition (C&D) landfill. The machinery is made up of 400,000 pounds of steel and will recycle about 75,000 tons annually.
By diverting nearly 75% of the debris that would otherwise be going into the landfill, the facility will be saving landfill space, conserving resources, and reducing the environmental impact of producing new materials. Cardboard, wood, metals, plastics, clean drywall, aggregates, and other construction-related materials are among those that will be accepted at the facility.
As Charlotte and Mecklenburg County continue to experience growth and further its economic development, the MRF will help to eliminate the waste that comes from these homes and businesses. According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) study, an estimated 8,000 lbs of waste is created from the construction of a 2,000 square foot home. The majority of the 8,000 is wood, cardboard, and drywall. Normally, that wood, cardboard, and drywall would end up in a landfill, but now it will be recycled— saving space and creating a more sustainable option for our environment and community. Additionally, not only will the facility be providing a sustainable environmental solution, but it will also be creating local jobs and supporting local markets and businesses.
Greenway Waste Solutions is continuing to make intentional choices and work toward a more sustainable future. Mike Griffin, partner at Griffin Brothers Companies, said, “We are excited to announce with the help of about 20 new employees this facility will enable us to recycle the majority of the debris that has historically been landfilled.”
With over 30 years’ experience in the construction and demolition (C&D) debris management industry, this new opening marks the seventh location for the Greenway Waste Solutions brand. Greenway Waste Solutions prides itself on its reputation and commitment to the local communities in which it operates. Greenway Waste Solutions’ goal as an organization is to further C&D recycling & reprocessing practices that will help lead to a greener and more sustainable Carolinas.
